Combining the most positive attributes from both 26 and 29 inch wheels, the mid-size tire is quickly taking over the all-mountain segment of mountain biking. But, if you're already ahead of the curve, and rolling on a 27.5in wheeled bike, then the Schwalbe Nobby Nic TL Ready 27.5in Tire will raise an eyebrow. Its greatest attribute is the traction potential in either wet or dry conditions, hard pack or loose marbles, or perfect loam. It's a real mountain tire that's prepared for the variability of epic rides. And with Schwalbe's Pacestar Triple Compound rubber, the Nobby Nic's grip, durability, and rolling resistance are optimized. And while its cornering qualities are partly attributable to the soft rubber compound, the U-shaped tread blocks on the shoulders are equally of importance. They're angled around 20 degrees outward, with siping that doesn't quite divide the block, creating the 'U.' These siped U-Blocks can deform easily and mold over the trail surface, working to counteract lateral forces when you're cornering hard. The Nobby Nic also has what Schwalbe calls, 'phase shifted blocks.' The simple explanation is that the tread blocks across the casing are not all in an even spacing pattern. Instead, the lateral clusters of blocks alternate from more closely spaced to more widely spaced. What Schwalbe found was an oscillation that developed within the older version of this tire at certain speeds. However, this latest version uses the phase shifted blocks to eliminate the dissonant vibration, making the tire roll faster than you'd ever expect from looking at its knobby profile. The tire is designed to be tubeless ready (TL), which means that you can say goodbye to pinch flats. The tubeless system allows you to run less air pressure, again enhancing the grip of the tire's tread. Better traction, less vibration, and no flats lead to a great ride. Remember, though, that it's necessary to use a liquid sealant within the tire to get an initial seal against the rim.
